Doujin Games

Western indie games have gained more popularity over the recent years. Acknowledged, welcomed and loved by gamers for their fresh game play ideas and unique presentation, small projects driven by the vision of a single person or small groups of people were able to find their place in the gaming world. Many of them rival the popularity of big budget, triple-A titles. Now one could ask: Are there similar movements in Japan?

Homebrew or independently developed software is known as Doujin soft in Japan. Doujin roughly translates to "kindred spirits" or a circle of people with similar interests, while 'soft' is the obvious abbreviation for software. In a nutshell, it is self-published software developed by hobbyists.

The Japanese enthusiast games do differ from western indie games in content and style. Genres like visual novels, fighting games and "SHMUPs" are predominant. The art direction is often heavily influenced by anime or manga in style. Some titles are available for free in non-profit form, but others are sold at big comic conventions, special interest stores or via direct self-distribution.

Regarding Vanguard Princess: it might not run on every system, use AppLocale (software from Microsoft, install as admin) to run this game, just rename the two files ヴァンガードプリンセス.exe and ヴァンガードプリンセス.kgt with an English name (e.g. Vanguard Princess.exe & Vanguard Princess.kgt); you can choose the name yourself, but the two files need to have the same name, while keeping their original extensions. After renaming the two files, start Applocale and follow the instructions, don't forget to choose Japanese (日本語) and choose to make a shortcut for easier access later on. After all this the game can be launched via AppLocale.
