No news this week really, so after the intermission we conquer your E-mails, InDisQuestions, and New Releases then Kickstart a brand new Question of the Week!
No show notes this week, guys. Travis is still on a crappy Mac and our episode tagging software is only for real computers, so next time ladies and gents!
QotW: Is the new Kickstarter trend already getting worn out or will it leak into the mainstream?

Regarding the Worst Company in America vote. The vote is held by the Consumerist website, a consumer watchdog site and subsidiary of Consumer Reports. The companies in the vote were nominated by readers of the site and then voted on in a March Madness style bracket. For each nominated company, the site offers some commentary on why the company is "bad", with links to articles discussing specific nomination worthy events.
For EA, they mention overpricing Madden, backing SOPA, micro transactions and they also include audio of John Riccitiello discussing micro transactions. As a gamer, the video does made me feel they are a bit evil. He talks about waiting until gamers are invested in the property and then going for the micro transaction. Here is a link to the audio
For the record, I agree that it is a bit silly that EA won. It seemed like a good year for BOA to win, but internet voters... As a side note BP won last year, beating out BOA.
But that's the thing, that's just a business strategy? I don't seen anything wrong with that. Overpricing of Madden and SOPA are one thing, but that's just a way to make money by providing the gamer additional content. This is a common strategy that many more companies than EA follow. The user has a choice on whether or not to buy it. If you don't want to spend more money, don't buy it. What about starting the trend of $15 map packs? $60 PC games? Activision is far worse than EA IMO.He talks about waiting until gamers are invested in the property and then going for the micro transaction.
Regardless... I mention oil companies b/c we don't have a choice but to buy gas at the prices they set. And oil companies are profiting hand over fist right now. They could easily scale back their profits to give American consumers a break, but they don't. They continue to charge outrageous prices for something that right now, we as a country are reliant on.
BP winning last year had everything to do with the spill in the gulf... and rightfully so. But my point is more that they need to win that every freaking year b/c they are the ones that screw consumers the most.
I agree on the oil company front. I have a friend whose wife is works for a large oil company. He tells me stories of some the crazy spending they do on employee events. They were not hurting during the recession, they were throwing 2 day pajama parties for executives.
EA needs to do what is necessary to be profitable. Hopefully they can find a good balance of quality and value.
Personally I hate the micro transaction model because it relies on "whales", a small percentage of players that spend ridiculous amounts of money. It is taking advantage of people with poor impulse control or an obsession with the game.
Agreed on all points bro. I had an Aunt that had a niece (The Aunt was married into the family so i never met this particular person), and her husband worked for an oil company and all she could talk about is the crazy huge bonuses he was getting. Meanwhile we were all cursing her b/c ... it's good to know that you can pay your executives like that while we're all paying $4+ for gas. It makes me sick. Oil companies are the worst.
It's bad for those impulse buyers but we have to make sure that we aren't those people. There has to be a balance.
Companies using that model can do things better too like making a membership type system that rewards those that buy pieces maybe giving discounts or free stuff... that kind of thing.
I really don't think EA is evil in any sense. They simply try to do good business. Sure people may hate the microtransaction model, online passes, annual releases of the same game...but in the end they're not forcing it upon anyone. Don't lik eonlin epasses.....don't buy used games....don't like Micro transactions...don't pay for them. People are eating the stuff up. That doesn't make EA evil.
It's like when I hear people say McDonalds is evil. Sure they target kids but in the end they aren't forcing anyone to buy their food.....it's the parents job to figure out what their children should eat and then when they're old enough to make their own decision it's totally their choice.
When I think of EVIL I think of a company that uses sweat shops in other countries to make a product and pay those people next to nothing and then sell them over here for ridiculous prices and the company see all the profit.
I'ts almost impossible for me to look at any entertainment companies as "evil" Morally questionable...sure...but not evil.
Listening to the show and just an FYI for anybody who might be picking up Mass Effect 2 on PS3. You will pretty much have to buy the online pass. I bought this game new after Christmas and the online pass expired at the end of 2011, so I was only a few days away so lucky me. However, I'm pretty sure anybody who buys it new now will have to buy the pass. Hoping for a Greatest Hits version then for those people I guess.
